Mt. Arthur Family School

In March 1981 an enthusiastic group of parents led by Rob Andrew met in the Lilydale area to discuss the idea of starting their own school. By August of that year a ten acre site had been identified on Whites Mill Rd. and the Mt Arthur Family School started in temporary accommodation in Underwood.

The Parent body took a further 2 years to build the school using the expertise within the group. Funding was secured from both State and Federal sources and the parent body managed the operation.

The school ran continuously until June 1996 when lack of enrolments forced it to close.

A Transition Period

For three years, from 1997 - 1999 the school was used by Brooks High School as an off campus facility. At the end of 1999 it was again empty and falling into disrepair. Only a few ex-Family School parents maintained a connection with the place and were open to suggestions as to how it could be used.

Mt. Arthur Centre

In March 2000 a group of people met on the site to discuss the idea of starting a centre dedicated to community health and well-being. From this humble sand-pit meeting a vision was created that aimed to provide a place for people to grow. This concept was given full support by the Mt. Arthur Family School parents. At a meeting in April 2000 the building was formally passed over to this group who became the Board. They comprised Nairn Walker, Maggie Peart, Sue Wilson, Ellen Allen and Jenny Newman. The first General Meeting and official function took place in May of that year. Jane Coulter replaced Jenny in January 2001. Since that time volunteers have worked tirelessly to develope the Centre to the exciting and dynamic place it is today.
